Aaron Rai remembers his roots to lift kids’ hopes
A group of talented young Black Country golfers were treated to a masterclass from rising star Aaron Rai – and ‘it went down a storm’.
Current European Tour player Rai, from Wolverhampton, checked in at the Darren Prosser Golf Academy in Kingswinford at the weekend.
He sat down with more than 30 youngsters to talk technique, his road to the professional ranks and answer a host of questions.
“He’s a great lad, I’ve known him since he was young,” said Prosser, a former professional and Walker Cup winner.
“It went down a storm. We had 30-35 attend, he did an hour-and-a-half talk about his warm-ups, shots, techniques.
“Then he did a Q and A with all the kids. It was a great insight into his road to becoming a professional.
“He was so polite, a gentleman and really grounded.
“He knows what these youngsters are going through, being a local lad as well.
“It’s nice for the kids to see that these pros are normal humans that play at local courses.”
Prosser used to give Rai lessons at 3 Hammers in Coven when he was a youngster.
He is delighted that the former Patshull Park Golf Club ace stopped by to stage a clinic for some of the talented youngsters at Prosser’s academy, and from the Staffordshire Under-18 squad he coaches.
“He signed a golf ball for all of them,” added Prosser.
“He took time to answer all the questions and said to give him a shout to do it again in the future.
“It went even better than expected. It was great.”
