Wolves captain Conor Coady philosophical on England snub
Wolves skipper Conor Coady refused to be downhearted after his latest England snub, stating he is fighting for places with players who reached a World Cup semi-final.
The Molineux man has starred for Wolves since being switch to a central role in a three-man defence by Nuno Espirito Santo last season.
But the 26-year-old has been consistently overlooked by Gareth Southgate, who has recently preferred to a system with two traditional centre-halves in his defence.
Southgate picked Everton’s Michael Keane and Burnley James Tarkowski along with regulars John Stones and Harry Maguire for his latest squad, while Brighton's Lewis Dunk had been in the previous two squads. Stones has now pulled out injured.
Coady told TalkSport: “I thought to myself all season that I’m trying to get into a squad that just reached a World Cup semi-final.
“They’re a really good squad. England is the pinnacle of any Englishman’s career.”
He added: “If it comes, it’ll be amazing, but I don’t overthink it because it’ll become a little bit of a problem.”
And Coady insisted Saturday night’s FA Cup quarter-final victory over Manchester United has been the highlight of an already stellar season in the Premier League.
“It’s the best,” he added. “In the Cup, anything can happen.
“Manchester United are an incredible football club with fantastic players and a brilliant manager.
“It was a special night for everybody, the atmosphere for building up for the last few weeks has been brilliant and we’d felt it all week.
“We couldn’t wait to get started and the way the whole night panned out was perfect.”
