A penalty from Ruben Neves saw Wolves earn a 1-1 draw against Ajax at the Banks's Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

It followed victories over Basel and Young Boys in Switzerland last week and Coady was pleased with Wolves got from their clash with the Dutch giants.

"It was a great run-out," he said. "We all know good Ajax are and how they want to keep possession. The most important thing was to keep our shape and keep on learning and improving.

"I thought we dealt with them quite well and it was a really good test for us.

"It was fantastic (to face Ajax) but it was the same against Young Boys and Basel, we've had some good tests this pre-season.

"It was a sloppy goal to concede, it came from our own piece of play. It was disappointing but we need to learn from it.

"They're a top team and move the ball really well."

Wolves' Premier League campaign kicks off three weeks on Saturday.

Both in terms of fitness and performance Coady thinks Wolves are progressing nicely.

"The fixtures are coming around thick and fast," he added.

"We need to get ready for August 11 and we need to get a lot fitter, there's a long way to go.

"We need to be as fit as possible – it's the biggest season of all our lives and we can't wait for it.

"We're all building towards August 11 and we can't wait for it.

"It's about honing and tweaking what we did last year – and getting better.

"It's a different kettle of fish what we're going into now. All the best players in the world are in this division."

Shropshire youngster Ryan Giles again featured for the first team in the absence of Barry Douglas and Ruben Vinagre – and was one of Wolves' star performers.

"They're the best team we've faced so far," the 18-year-old said. "They're going into the Champions League qualifiers soon and they've had a lot of preparation coming into this game.

"We always knew they'd be tough opposition – they've got some very good, experienced players.

"It was always going to benefit us as a team and as individuals as well."
