Wolves blog: A letter to Nuno

When Nuno Espirito Santo joined Wolves in May 2017, Wolves fans didn’t really know what to expect...writes Wolves blogger Tom Tracey

Fosun were a year into their stewardship, but on the field, things hadn’t progressed as hoped with Kenny Jackett, Walter Zenga and Paul Lambert all dispensed with within a year.

But from that pre-season game against Leicester, we began to realise something different was happening.

Although everyone from the players to backroom staff to fans can be applauded for their input and role in Wolves’ most successful season ever in the second tier, there is one man who coordinated all with aplomb.

That man is Nuno.

Thank you for bringing unity back to Wolverhampton Wanderers and giving us incredible, fluid football to watch for nine months.

The implementation of the 3-4-3 tactic, keeping possession of the ball and keeping it on the ground – but with the ability to play direct passes with beautiful precision – has been a pleasure to watch.

The value for money for match tickets has never been so consistently high, with some fantastic goals, passes and moments at Molineux and on the road.

The passion you and your staff have shown, while causing anger and jealousy from rivals, has endeared you to Wolves fans and it’s obvious you genuinely care for this club.

Those Nuno moments, at Bristol City, Middlesbrough, Cardiff – they will live long in the memory.

Whether you realised the bond would be so strong and be formed so quickly is unknown, but early on we realised there was something special going on.

Thank you for your pulling power in getting the likes of Willy Boly, Diogo Jota and particularly Ruben Neves into the club. All of whom, among many others, are superb footballers who are already skilled enough to play at the next level.

Although you did not win the EFL Championship manager of the season award, you did rightfully win the LMA’s version of the prize. If the EFL award was given at the end of the season rather than in April, you surely would have claimed this prize too.

To collect 99 points in this league is no mean feat – while we all would have liked to hit the century, the team were forced to play four more games after winning promotion.

Clearly there would be some sub-conscious switching off at this point, and they still managed to claim seven points from the four games.

But you led the team to a significant lead which meant that they had a huge buffer on second place and we were never in danger of dropping from the top once we were there.

Thank you for your attention to detail and professionalism, which led to Wolves never losing twice in a row.

There is a reason the lyrics to the chant say, ‘Nuno had a dream’. We have bought into your vision – and it seems the entire club has too – and there is more optimism going into this top-flight campaign than previously.

Who knows what would have happened if you had abandoned the Wolves project for the Everton job early in the season – but crucially, you now spearhead a project which possibly has limitless potential.

Obrigado.
