Majority of Wolves fans back safe standing
Wolves fans have overwhelmingly backed the club’s stance on safe standing, with almost 90 per cent of thousands of supporters saying they would support it being introduced at Molineux.
The club yesterday issued a statement saying they are keen to explore the possibility of introducing safe standing and would welcome being part of any pilot scheme should the Government change its policy on the issue.
Fans have welcomed the idea with 87 per cent of 3,000 voters on the Express & Star website saying they would support a move to bring safe standing to Molineux.
A Twitter poll of 2,800 fans yielded exactly the same percentage with only 13 per cent not backing the idea.
The majority of social media comments supported the notion.
Supporter and E&S Fan Verdict regular Russ Cockburn said: “All about giving people choice. Make the South Bank 15,000 safe standing and the rest sitting so all ages can enjoy the experience they want.
Jamie Angus added: “I was really unsure about this to start with - the memory of Hillsborough rightly lives long in our psyche.
“However - having been to Dortmund this year I’m a massive convert. Would be safer in the South Bank given most stand there all game anyway.”
Dan Southall said: “Its introduction in Scotland has changed the atmosphere at Celtic and it could increase revenue streams from ticketing.
“It’s been proven to be safe in Europe and north of the border. It’s supported by Hillsborough families. It should now be allowed in England.”
And Dave Sheldon tweeted: “All for it! When we score there’s far more chance of falling in the South Bank when the seats are shin high than there would be if there was a rail waist high.”
On the Express & Star website, WolvesGuru commented to say: “The South Bank we tend to stand anyway, Billy Wright and Steve Bull I’ve sat in, I presume they sit in the Stan Cullis, most of us been on our feet all season anyway celebrating!!
“Cant see the problem with standing as long as its safe and fans can evacuate quickly, with no silly fences preventing them running onto the pitch if necessary, which was in my opinion a major downfall at Hillsborough.”
Wolves have kept an eye on the issue for some time.
Managing director Laurie Dalrymple said yesterday: “We have all been watching the trial at Celtic with great interest, and the feedback there seems to be overwhelmingly positive in terms of atmosphere, safety and security.
“Whilst West Brom’s recent proposal may have been rejected by the DCMS, it is clear momentum is gathering in favour of those who want to see a safe-standing solution at least trialled in English football’s top tiers, and we would very much like to be a part of that when it happens.”
