Leeds United 0 Wolves 1 - player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players after Championship survival is confirmed with a 1-0 win away at Leeds United.

Published

Andy Lonergan

A couple of dodgy kicks straight and he was charged down by Chris Wood in what was almost a costly error, but on the flip side he made a superb save from Bartley's header and kept his composure during an aerial bombardment in the second half. 7/10

Conor Coady

Started really strongly with some great challenges and he enjoyed getting forward down that right side. His attacking threat lessened, as did the team's, and he could have stopped a couple of Leeds' many crosses into the box. But overall a very solid display. 7/10

Mike Williamson

Not for the first time this season he came in from the cold to produce an excellent performance. Adds leadership, experience and composure, which more than makes up for his lack of pace. Reads the game superbly. Out of contract in the summer and he's surely worth another year on reduced terms or a pay-as-you-play deal? Just his ninth game for the club but he's yet to play badly or make a glaring error. 8/10

Richard Stearman

Hadn't featured since the defeat to Blues in February, but put in as good a display as any Wolves centre half has in the past two months. Lost count of the amount of instances he was in the right place at the right time. Blocks, clearances, interceptions...he was everywhere. He and Williamson formed a very effective partnership which meant, despite Leeds having almost all of the game in the second half, Lonergan was only forced into making one save. Another whose future is up in the air, but his experience and commitment isn't easy to come by and he's proved a valuable addition at times this season. 9/10

Matt Doherty

A welcome return to form after a couple of poor games. Like Coady he was rarely seen in an attacking sense, but kept it tight at the back. Made one crucial interception to deny danger-man Wood a free shot at goal in the first half. 7/10

Ben Marshall

What a signing he's been. Utilised in another new position, on the right of midfield in a 4-4-2, and he excelled. Wonderful vision and execution when he teed up Dicko's winner (a fourth assist in his past eight appearances). So positive yet precise with his passing. The fans sang his name when he departed five minutes from time. 8/10

Dave Edwards

The game plan suited Edwards' style perfectly and he enacted his task to the letter. Constantly forced Leeds to go wide with his harassing of their midfielders, or forced them to go long when closing down their defenders. He and Saiss offered great protection to the back four. The 1-0 win with Edwards wearing the captain's armband was the perfect way to mark his 300th game for the club. He's up to equal 33rd on the all-time appearance list. 8/10

Romain Saiss

A very disciplined display which was crucial to Wolves' approach. Sniffed out plenty of danger and kept his passes short and simple. Brilliantly played in Weimann for a golden early chance after spotting the Austrian's run. 8/10

George Saville

Often criticised, very unfairly, for what he doesn't have in his armoury. But what Saville, starting his first game since Brentford away last month, does do is get on with his job with minimal fuss. Very rarely makes a mistake. Won a few tackles and gave good protection to Doherty on the left of midfield. One decent shot at goal which was well blocked by a flying Bartley. 7/10

Andreas Weimann

Played up front alongside Dicko although he often drifted to the right wing. A ridiculous amount of running, as always, and he linked up well with Marshall. Teed up a good chance for Saville but spurned a wonderful opportunity to break the deadlock early on when he put his shot too close to Rob Green. 7/10

Nouha Dicko

That's the clinical Nouha Dicko we all know and love. A piercing run in behind the Leeds defence, one touch, goal. A clinical striker's finish, the sort that has been lacking all season long from any of Wolves' front men. As Lambert keeps saying, give this guy a full pre-season and then we'll see him back to his best. 7/10

Substitutes

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (for Dicko, 68)

Threw his body around for 22 minutes and made a nuisance of himself when he could. Won a free kick by the corner flag in injury time to relieve pressure at an important moment. 7/10

Lee Evans (for Saville, 68)

No frills, nothing spectacular, passed the ball to gold shirts. Did all that was required of him. 7/10

Kortney Hause (for Marshall, 85)

Only on for five minutes but made a telling contribution with two clearances, one of which was a brilliant header off the line, described by Paul Lambert as 'world class'. 7/10

Subs not used: Burgoyne, Iorfa, Price, Gibbs-White.
