Wolves 3 Cardiff 1 - player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players after Paul Lambert's team win yet again, beating Cardiff 3-1.

Published

Andy Lonergan

Caught in no-man's land for the Cardiff goal - if he'd stayed on his line it's a more difficult chance for Zohore. Then a horrible punch from a corner soon after, when the ball skimmed fortunately off his hand. Thereafter he improved. And he released the ball quickly, which was good to see. 5/10

Conor Coady

Another solid, no-frills performance from Coady, who doesn't look 100 per cent comfortable in this position (why would he, it's still only been a few games) but is proving himself more than capable of filling in. Rarely makes mistakes. 6/10

Danny Batth

Two goals in a match for the skipper for the first time in his career. They were both expertly guided headers. And his bread and butter defending was on song too - aside from Zohore's goal, where others were at fault, the Cardiff dangerman was kept quiet. Forming a consistent partnership now with Kortney Hause. 8/10

Kortney Hause

It's been an impressive few weeks for Hause who has quickly and efficiently put his discipline issue behind him. A couple of ropey first half moments but thereafter he was unflappable. Probably the best spell of his Wolves career at centre half.

7/10

Matt Doherty

Not a day for gallivanting forward and, like Coady on the other flank, he kept things simple and calm. Cardiff's two wingers got little joy from the two full-backs. However, a point off for sleeping for Cardiff's goal when he was two yards behind his team mates and kept Zohore onside. 5/10

David Edwards

Upped his game in recent weeks after a bit of a lull during Wolves' losing streak. Snapped away in midfield and kept Ralls' influence to a minimum. Keeps providing key moments going forward too - he won the ball and played in Costa for the third, which was reminiscent of when he did the same at Brentford a couple of weeks ago. 7/10

Lee Evans

Another who has put in a number of consistent performances since he returned to the side at Brentford. Kept the tempo up, which was crucial to this win, and rarely gave the ball away. Has eight games to keep this going and prove he's worthy of a first-team place next season. 7/10

Ben Marshall

The architect of this victory. Searching free kick for the first goal and then a come-and-get-me teasing cross for the second. In fact he nearly teed up a third for Batth with a second half corner. But, more than just his on-the-money set pieces, his all-round game was excellent. Proving to be versatile too - already played on both flanks, at right back and in central midfield. Three assists in four appearances. Looks to be a class act. 8/10

Helder Costa

What more can you say about this guy? Such a special talent who Wolves fans should make the most of, because he won't be in the Championship for long. Must have velcro on his boots...the ball just sticks to him. He actually had a pretty quiet game before he lit up Molineux with a goal to swoon over, making defender Sean Morrison and goalkeeper Allan McGregor look like complete doughnuts as he sent them one way and turned the other. McGregor should have had to pay to get back in. 7/10

Andreas Weimann

The 'freak of nature' did it again with an afternoon of running, running and more running. Could have got on the scoresheet had a couple of passes, such as Costa's in that crazy four-on-two breakaway, been better placed. Otherwise Weimann's task was a bit of a thankless one, but an important role for the team. 7/10

Ivan Cavaleiro

A step down from his influence in the wins over Brentford and Fulham - and that's the imperfection Cavaleiro has to iron out next season. Has bags of talent but isn't yet consistent. And because the defensive side of his game is so weak Wolves can't afford to carry him if he's not on song. Needs to take a leaf out of Costa's book and contribute even when he's having a quiet day. 6/10

Substitutes

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (for Cavaleiro, 73)

A good option from the bench as he never takes long to get to grips with the pace of the game. Helped secure the win, defending from the front and creating space. 6/10

Romain Saiss (for Marshall, 73)

A mixed bag - won a couple of tackles but also gifted Cardiff possession on one or two occasions. 5/10

George Saville (for Weimann, 87)

Came on to see the game out. N/A

Subs not used: Burgoyne, Williamson, Gibbs-White, Dicko.
