The two teams entered the Championship clash sitting at opposite ends of the table with the Tykes rock-bottom and without a win in 12 matches.

But they raced into a two-goal lead at The Hawthorns thanks to an excellent brace from Cauley Woodrow.

More on this story:

Albion had to dig deep to get something out the game with the Tykes - under the guidance of caretaker boss Adam Murray - happy to frustrate Slaven Bilic's side.

But they were given hope when Bambo Diaby headed into his own net from a corner.

Matheus Pereira then rescued a point for the Baggies when he powered in an excellent cross from Conor Townsend.

Match report

Bilic made one change from the team that secured a 1-0 win at Middlesbrough when naming his starting line-up.

After a quiet afternoon in the North East, Filip Krovinovic came out of the side with Kyle Edwards the man to come in.

It meant Matheus Pereira was able to take over duties in the number 10 role with Edwards starting on the right-wing and Grady Diangana on the left in Bilic's 4-2-3-1 formation.

Barnsley, who entered the game sitting bottom of the Championship, lined up in a 5-3-2 formation with Cauley Woodrow partnering Conor Chaplin up front.

The visitors showed their intent to frustrate Albion right from the off with Murray's side lining up with a clear back five.

But Bilic's men came close to getting the early goal they craved when Darnell Furlong burst into the box before seeing a shot blocked by a defender.

The ball then fell for Charlie Austin.

But, on the angle, the striker then saw a low effort saved by the legs of Brad Collins.

Albion were enjoying the lion's share of possession but they fell behind just before the 20-minute mark.

Dimitri Cavare did well to burst down the right before delivering a pin-point cross.

And that was met by Woodrow who placed his header perfectly beyond the outstretched arm of Sam Johnstone.

With something to hold onto, the Tykes were content to sit back and try and hit Albion on the counter.

And that is how they doubled their lead with Murray's side rapidly moving the ball from back to front after Austin failed to meet a Furlong cross.

That allowed the visitors to again work the ball to Woodrow - who then thundered a strike into the back of the net from 25 yards.

In the 32nd minute, fans inside the stadium united to applaud in memory of Rob Spray - the Albion fan who lost his life while supporting England in Bulgaria last week.

On the pitch, Barnsley's game plan continued to be clear with the Tykes crowding the middle of the park to ensure there was very little room for Albion to create.

And the Baggies grew increasingly frustrated as the half-time whistle approached with Furlong and Romaine Sawyers entering the referee's notebook in quick succession.

Bilic's men did come close to pulling a goal back before the interval - with Diangana cutting inside before seeing a low drive saved by the keeper.

But overall, the game had gone exactly how Barnsley had wanted as the teams made their way off at the break - with Woodrow's two goals putting them in a commanding position.

Bilic made a double change at the break with Krovinovic and Conor Townsend replacing Edwards and Nathan Ferguson.

The visitors, though, should have put the game to bed in the 55th minute when a cross was stood up for McGeehan.

He planted a header against the crossbar but the ball then fell for Alex Mowatt who lashed a strike wide when he should have scored.

Albion responded and came close to pulling a goal back as the clock ticked past the hour mark.

Krovinovic hit the byline before picking out Austin with a low cross.

But the striker then failed to connect with the ball properly after cheekily trying to flick it towards goal.

Moments later, though, the Baggies did have one back with Diaby heading a Pereira corner into his own net.

Albion were now effectively playing a 4-2-4 formation with Hal Robson-Kanu coming on to replace Diangana and join Austin up front - with Krovinovic and Pereira the widemen.

But it was half-time substitute Townsend who made Albion's equaliser with the full-back whipping in a wonderfully inviting cross from the left.

And that was met by Pereira who powered a header past the diving Collins.

From that point, the Baggies went in search of a winner.

But to Barnsley's credit, they saw out the game well to ensure they took a point back to Yorkshire.
