How did we rate Albion's starting XI? (AMA)

Sam Johnstone - 8

Sam Johnstone (AMA)

Rarely tested during an opening half which saw Villa have plenty of possession without creating a clear-cut chance.

Punched clear a low El Ghazi cross early in the second half.

Saved brilliantly from Adomah at the end of 90 minutes.

Mason Holgate - 6

Mason Holgate (AMA)

Put in the first meaty challenge of the match to dispossess El Ghazi and then delivered the throw from which Dawson levelled the aggregate scores in the first half.

A very useful outlet for the Baggies on the flank.

Penalty saved in shootout.

Craig Dawson - 8

Craig Dawson (AMA)

Sparked pandemonium inside The Hawthorns when he headed home Holgate’s long throw to level the aggregate scores just before the half-hour mark.

A towering performance in the centre of defence.

Kyle Bartley - 7

Kyle Bartley (AMA)

Some key challenges on Abraham during the first-half as Albion were able to keep Villa’s top scorer quiet.

Made some hugely important blocks in the closing stages with his team down to 10 men and battling to hang on.

Ahmed Hegazi - 7

Ahmed Hegazi (AMA)

The pick of Albion’s backline once more.

Read the game extremely well and seemed to have a sixth sense to danger.

Some crunching tackles in the second half helped prevent Villa from building momentum.

Penalty saved in shootout.

Kieran Gibbs - 6

Kieran Gibbs (AMA)

Worked tirelessly on the flanks and made several key blocks to prevent crosses going into the Albion box.

Seen little in the attacking third but played his part in the Baggies containing Villa’s attacking stars.

Matt Phillips - 6

Matt Phillips (AMA)

Seemed to have far more energy than in Saturday’s first leg and did his share of pressing and closing down Villa’s backline.

Sent a header over the bar from close range as Albion piled on the pressure early in the second period.

Chris Brunt - 5

Chris Brunt (AMA)

Sent an early effort over the bar and was then just off target twice more in the second period.

Lucky to escape a card after catching McGinn’s arm with his boot late in the first half.

Sent-off for two second-half challenges on the Scot.

Stefan Johansen - 6

Stefan Johansen (AMA)

Showed plenty of energy and aggression in the middle of the park when he was again the man tasked with trying to stop Grealish.

Taken off after picking up a knock in the second half.

Played a huge role in both legs.

Jacob Murphy - 5

Jacob Murphy (AMA)

A huge disappointment during a first half in which he rarely saw the ball and did little with it on the occasions he did.

Could have been the hero early in the second half but saw his shot cleared by Mings following an error by Steer.

Jay Rodriguez - 8

Jay Rodriguez (AMA)

Raised the noise levels with a shoulder barge on Mings in the passage of play which led to Dawson’s goal.

Led the line excellently, ensuring Villa’s defenders were never able to relax.

Taken off early in extra time.
