West Brom caretaker Jimmy Shan could ring the changes against Reading

Jimmy Shan is planning to utilise his squad against Reading today to make sure he doesn't burn out his players.

The Baggies are highly likely to finish in the play-off spots this season, and Shan does not want to risk over-exerting his team ahead of those games.

Today's match is also Albion's second in four days over a hot Easter weekend, and comes after a three-game week.

“We've got a big squad, and it's certainly an option to make changes and it might be a viable opportunity to do so," admitted Shan.

“I think we have to look at the period of games – we've played three within seven days and then we've got a Friday and Monday turnaround.

“It's been a long season, and if you look at our squad as well, we've got lots of players who are used to a Premier League season. We would have completed that seven or eight games ago.

“When you have two games with such a short turnaround as well, it's something we need to be wary of.

“We'll sit down as a staff and review the players' data and see how they feel. It's something we will consider."

Reading may be fighting a relegation battle, but they've been greatly improved under Jose Gomes, who looks to be guiding the Royals to safety.

They've only lost three of their last 15 games, and just once at the Madejski Stadium in their last eight home fixtures.

Albion caretaker Shan has delivered five wins from his seven games in charge, but he's aware the Baggies are not yet the finished article.

Disappointed with poor spells against Bristol City and Hull, when his side have conceded multiple goals in quick succession, he wants Albion to be more consistent over 90 minutes.

“In the second half (against Hull) for the first 10-15 minutes we lacked a tempo and urgency and we were very flat and we gifted them momentum," said Shan.

“The week before we had a pretty similar start to the second half where we lacked the tempo and urgency.

“It's something we need to look at because we can't gift any opposition we play against 10 or 15 minutes for them to gain control and momentum. So it's something we need to review and have a look at."

Jay Rodriguez was rested against Hull City on Good Friday for the first time this season and could return to the team.

Ahmed Hegazi will be assessed for his ongoing ankle injury that forced him off early on against the Tigers.
