The 36-year-old playmaker trained for three days with Darren Moore's men and is now in talks over a deal with the Baggies.

Russell Martin was also on trial, but it's believed the 32-year-old centre-back will not be offered a contract.

Hoolahan was released by Norwich City in the summer after 10 years at Carrow Road.

Moore is keen to bolster his attacking midfield options after selling Nacer Chadli to AS Monaco for £10million last month.

Hoolahan is expected to provide competition and cover for Leicester loanee Harvey Barnes, who has sparkled in the No.10 role so far this season.

The Irishman has years of Championship and Premier League experience with Norwich, and has played more than 200 games in the second tier.

He made 34 appearances for Norwich last season, half of them starts. He retired from international football earlier this year.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Albion scouted Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker when he first joined Roma in the Italian league.
