The 21-year-old arrived with plenty of promise 12 months ago, but after a frustrating season last time out, he scored his first goal for the Baggies tonight in their 1-0 win over Luton Town in the Carabao Cup first round.

Usually a winger, Burke was played up front by Moore, who also experimented with other players in new positions as well as his system.

And Albion's head coach was pleased with what he saw from the Scotland international.

"I was very pleased for Oli to get the goal," said Moore. "It will do him the world of good.

"It's always nice if you have a player who can play a couple of positions and he looks equally comfortable up front. I thought he held himself very well.

"He's been patient, he's persevered, worked hard in training, and continues to do so.

"Its another option for me and great for Oli. We'll pick the bones out of that as a coaching staff over the next 24 hours."

There was also a new role for midfielder Sam Field, who impressed at left centre-back in a back three.

Like Burke, the 20-year-old struggled for minutes last season, despite impressing whenever he was on the pitch.

"Last year, Sam's heading ability and physicality came on," said Moore.

"It's an option, we know he can handle playing there, his use of the ball is very good and he put in an accomplished and mature performance.

"I'm really pleased for him, Jonathan Leko, Rekeem Harper, Kyle Edwards, all those youngsters stepped in and did well."

Harvey Barnes and Leko were also tried out as number 10s tonight, as Moore tinkered with his formation.

Having preferred a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 so far, the Baggies boss opted for an experimental and, at times, exciting 3-4-1-2 system.

"We experimented tonight and it is a possibilty moving forward," said Moore. "I thought the players handled it very well,

"You might come up with new formations and systems, but you need players to take to it.

"The seniors controlled it. I was pleased to James Morrison come through 90 minutes."

However, there was still no sign of senior players Craig Dawson and Nacer Chadli.

"They are both back in full time training," said Moore. "They are both nearing where we want them to be.

"We know this Championship season is a marathon not a sprint so rather than risk them early for a game we are making sure they are physically right first. They're getting closer."

Chadli only returned to training eight days ago because of the World Cup and Dawson's pre-season was affected by transfer speculation.

The defender handed in a transfer request over summer, but when Moore was asked if his head was ready to play for the Baggies, he said: "Dawson's never had his head not ready to play for West Brom.

"He's a fantastic professional. I have the pleasure in knowin g him personally. I am looking forward to when both players return. They are very much in my plans."
