Jay Rodriguez 'gutted' with West Brom defeat as dad slams tactics

Jay Rodriguez was ‘gutted’ to return from Bournemouth without any points on Saturday – as his father slammed Alan Pardew’s tactics.

Striker Jay fired the rock-bottom Baggies in front at the Vitality Stadium, but the substitution of Jonny Evans – who was feeling the after-effects of his illness – sparked a dramatic turnaround in favour of the Cherries.

Ben Foster allowed a Jordan Ibe shot to squirm into the net before Junior Stanislas curled home a superb free-kick winner to bag Eddie Howe’s men the points.

And Jay’s dad Kiko Rodriguez questioned the decisions made by Pardew on the south coast.

“Is it me. 1.0 up take a defender of (sic) put a winger on,” he tweeted the official Albion account. “1.1 need to go for the win so you take off a centre forward and replace with a centre forward. Surely you would go for it. Saying that 2.1 down.”

Jay’s goal was his ninth of the season, putting him one clear of strike partner Salomon Rondon at the top of the club’s scoring charts.

And he praised the effort of his team-mates – as well as the supporters who made the journey south on Saturday.

“We’re absolutely gutted about getting beaten,” he said. “We know Bournemouth are a good side, a good passing side, and they’ve got individual talent but I thought we kept them quiet.

“We set out a game plan, we stuck to it and yet we’re stood here without any points.

“It’s not a lack of effort from the lads, they’ve worked hard every day since I’ve been here.

“That’s the thing that keeps us going, and keeps me going. I look at my teammates and every single one of them is grafting.

“We worked on the move for our goal in training so for it to come off was really nice. It was a good team goal.

“We’ve got to pick out the positives of everything we can, whether that’s something small or something big.

“The main thing is the three points though and we’ve not been good enough so far, but it’s not mathematically impossible so we’ve still got to believe we can get out of this.”

He added: “We appreciate the fans travelling down. Wherever we are they’ve shown their full support.

“As players we really appreciate that and we thank them, we’re gutted as equally as the fans. We’ll hopefully try and put it right in the next game.”
