Chris Brunt: Win is only the start for West Brom

Chris Brunt says last Saturday’s victory over Brighton is ‘only a start’ that has to be built on at Everton this weekend.

The Baggies ended their four-month wait for a Premier League win at The Hawthorns with a 2-0 triumph over the Seagulls.

It keeps them within touching distance of safety but the team remain second-bottom and Brunt knows it has to spur Albion on to more victories.

“It’s a tough league when momentum is not with you and we’ve drawn a lot of games,” he said shortly after the game. “We’re still difficult to beat but a lot of draws have killed us this season and we’ve dropped a lot of points from positions we should have won and that’s something we need to look at.

“The clean sheet and the win by two goals is a positive result but it’s only a start.

“It’s nice to get three points but we need to make sure we build on it.”

Thanks to a congested league table, the Baggies have not been cut adrift on their winless run and can lift themselves out of the bottom three this weekend.

“With the run of form we’ve been on being that bad, teams haven’t got too far away from us, which is a bonus because in other years it could have been different,” said Brunt.

“You look at Villa a couple of years ago, they went on a really bad run and ended up detached at the bottom of the table.

“There’s a couple of points for us and Swansea but not a million miles so if you string a couple of wins together you’re right back in the mix.

“That’s our aim and hopefully we can go to Everton next week and get something and take it from there.

“Games run out pretty quickly.

“There are still 14 or 15 games left and you think ‘there are plenty of points to play for’ but it comes around very fast.

“Since the gaffer took over we’ve had chances and games we’ve looked at thinking we could get wins in and it hasn’t materialised.

“A couple of teams around us have beaten us and it as important to make sure that run didn’t keep happening.

“The games against the teams down and around us are very important.

“Since the gaffer has come in I think our performances have been better with a lot more intent and we have struggled to score goals and win games.

“Set plays are a big thing for us and we haven’t been doing great off those either but we won the (Brighton) game off two set plays, which is pleasing.”
