The 36-year-old has signed a one year deal with a second year based on appearances after undergoing a medical in the Midlands today

Barry turned down a two-year deal at Goodison Park in favour of first-team football after competition for places at Everton grew fiercer this summer following Ronald Koeman's spending spree.

He is being brought in by Pulis to replace departed skipper Darren Fletcher in central midfield and his arrival may pave the way for teenagers Sam Field or Rekeem Harper to be sent out on loan.

“There was a big void when we lost Fletch and Gareth will fill that void,” said Pulis. “He’s a fantastic player and I think his attitude towards playing is really gauged by the fact that Everton had offered him a two-year contract to stay there.

“He really wants to play and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Barry, who has 53 England caps to his name, has been an ever-present in the Premier League for the past 19 seasons.

He has 628 Premier League appearances under his belt, and needs to play just five more games to overtake Ryan Giggs at the top of the league's all-time appearance charts.

He missed Everton's opening day 1-0 victory over Stoke with an ankle knock, but is expected to be fit in time for Albion's trip to Burnley this Saturday.

“I want to come and help the team,” said Barry. “That’s always been the same for me wherever I have played. I want to help the team improve, work hard and hopefully add quality."

Koeman has signed Morgan Schneiderlin and Davy Klaassen in central midfield this year, and Everton have now agreed a £45m fee with Swansea for Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Although the Toffees boss wanted to keep Barry, who had a year left on his Everton contract, he respected his midfielder's desire for first-team football and allowed him to leave.

Baggies chairman John Williams was delighted to get the deal over the line, saying: “He’s got an amazing footballing pedigree and everybody will get a buzz from his joining us. We can’t wait to see him in action in our shirt.”

Sigurdsson is having a medical in Liverpool tomorrow ahead of a move which could lead to Nacer Chadli's exit from The Hawthorns.

The Swans hope to replace Sigurdsson with Chadli and Pulis is ready to cash in on his wantaway star.

The Baggies are willing to listen to offers in the region of £25m for the Belgian, who was left on the bench for the opening game of the season.

Barry is the third addition to Pulis’s squad this summer, following the arrival of £12m man Jay Rodriguez and loanee defender Ahmed Hegazi, who both met young fans at The Hawthorns today for a signing session.

Pulis is also hoping to sign a young centre-back this week but has moved away from his initial target Ben Gibson after having two club-record bids rejected by Middlesbrough.

And Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has admitted the Black Cats are vulnerable to offers for Albion target Lamine Kone.

“First and foremost he is a very good player,” said Grayson. “When you have the quality he has, his physique, pace and power then there won’t be many better Championship defenders in this league than him.

“Who knows. We are vulnerable like every other club is. Ultimately, every player will have a price on their head and won’t leave without our valuation being met.”
