The forward joined the Saddlers earlier this month and netted a brace on just his second appearance – against Crawley in the Carabao Cup.

Lavery began his career at Sheffield Wednesday, but had loan spells at Southend, Plymouth, Chesterfield and Portsmouth. He then joined Sheffield United on a permanent deal.

But he has spent the last two campaigns on loan at Rotherham and Bury.

Now though he is a Walsall player and looking forward to putting down some roots.

“I have had a lot of loans in my career,” Lavery said.

“I have been in and out of a lot of teams here and there because I am on loan or I have been recalled.

“Sometimes the loan has only been for half a season, that’s another example.

“It’s now very nice to have a home and I want to get my foot in the door and just push on from there.

“I’m really enjoying being here. If I could find a house, that would be nice. But everyone around the club has been really welcoming, they’ve been very helpful. I can’t complain about anything.”

After being released by Sheffield United, Lavery spent his summer making sure his next move was the right one.

“It was all about being patient and waiting for the right thing so I’m delighted to be here now,” he added.

“It’s a strange feeling when you’re a free agent.

“I have never really been in that position if I am being honest.

“It was a frustrating summer for me really because you go home for four or five weeks and you just want to get back into it.

“You have got to be careful though, you don’t want to jump into something that will turn out to be a negative.”
