Walsall chasing a trio of signings

Walsall boss Darrell Clarke says he’d like to add another three players to his squad before the transfer window closes.

The Saddlers are currently enjoying a pre-season trip to Poland with Clarke’s men securing a 1-0 win over I Liga side Odra Opole in a friendly yesterday.

In that match, a trialist featured on the right-wing with that man understood to be Bristol City winger Rory Holden.

Alongside Holden, fans had hoped former Leicester wideman Kairo Edwards-John would be in Poland after he impressed in the friendlies at Leamington and Nuneaton.

But while he didn’t want to be drawn on specific targets, Clarke said he will make further additions before the window closes on September 3.

“I brought a 22-man squad out here (to Poland) and I’d still like to bring another two or three players into the squad by the end of the transfer window,” Clarke said.

“We’ll continue to assess things as we go along, but there is nothing close at the minute.

“Recruitment is an ongoing thing behind the scenes and we’ll add two or three before the window shuts.”

Clarke has already signed 11 players this summer as he works to rebuild Walsall’s squad.

And the 41-year-old is pleased with how the team is gelling with the season still a couple of weeks away.

“I have had a look at everyone and they have all worked hard and conducted themselves well,” the boss continued.

“There is a really good togetherness about the group.

“They are gelling together quickly. They have done well, I’ve been relatively pleased with where we are at with a few weeks still to go.

“They are a decent group that is willing to work and take things on board.

“But the proof in the pudding is when the season starts.”

Walsall still have two days left in Poland but Clarke has been pleased with the trip so far.

“We had a double session on Monday – the lads worked really hard,” he added.

“Tuesday was the game and then a recovery session.

“Then we had a BBQ, it’s been good.”
