The Saddlers squad is due to report to their Essington training base on June 24 to begin their preparations for the new campaign.

Clarke became renowned for his tough pre-seasons during his time in charge of Bristol Rovers.

And he says things will be just as tough for the Saddlers.

“We are going to create a hard working environment,” Clarke said.

“It will be a really tough pre-season but we have got to get the balance of it right.

"We have to make sure we don’t have too many injuries.

"It is all about preparing the players for the season which is a long 10-month period.”

Alongside their work at Essington, Walsall are also heading to Poland for a training camp.

“It’s a great opportunity for us as a team to go away,” Clarke continued.

“It’s not just for a bonding process.

“It’s good for us to be nailing things down and for a change of scenery. The bonding is an important part of it.

“But it is also about getting what I want out of the players.”
