Dean Keates hails Mark Gillespie after Walsall exit

Walsall boss Dean Keates has praised the professionalism of former goalkeeper Mark Gillespie following his departure to Motherwell.

The glovesman joined the Scottish side on a two-year-deal last week after having his contract at the Banks’s Stadium terminated by mutual consent.

Gillespie began last season as Walsall’s number one but lost his place midway through the campaign to Liam Roberts.

But while he only played one game under Keates – against Fleetwood on the final day – the boss said the 26-year-old had a big impact off the field.

“Gilly (Gillespie) was a great pro in the time we had together at the football club,” Keates said.

“He was always vocal, he supported the lads even when he wasn’t involved and he always trained correctly.

“He is one of the players I spoke to at the end of the season and I wanted to be honest with him.

“I said if your agent has got different opportunities that can offer you more playing time and a bit more longevity on your contract – it’s fine if you want to talk to them, just get in touch.

“If we can make it work for all parties then we will get it done. I’d like to thank him for the brief time I worked with him because he is an excellent professional.”

Meanwhile, Walsall have confirmed ticket prices for their pre-season friendly with Villa on Tuesday, July 17.

Entry for the match, which kicks off at 7.45pm, has been priced at £12 for adults. A concession ticket, for under-18s and over-65s, costs £6 and a family ticket for one adult and one junior is available for £15.
