Jon Whitney sacked by Walsall

The boss, who had been in charge of first-team affairs for two-years, was dismissed this afternoon.

Walsall have lost four of their last five games and currently sit 14th in League One, six points above the relegation zone.

But while results have been poor, the Walsall board have also opted to act with Whitney's relationship with the club's supporters at an all time low.

During Saturday's derby defeat to Shrewsbury, supporters unveiled a banner calling for Whitney to be sacked.

There was also widespread anger on social media following the loss to Paul Hurst's side.

And now the club's hierarchy have opted to act with coaches Ian Sharps and John Ward placed in temporary charge.

Whitney has been employed by Walsall for the past 15 years and filled various roles before he was appointed boss.

As well as being club physio and head of medicine, he also acted as assistant manager.

The statement said: "Walsall Football Club have today parted company with manager Jon Whitney.

"The Saddlers boss has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect, ending a 15-year association with the club.

"He first joined the club as physiotherapist in 2003, progressing to the position of first-team manager on a full-time basis in June 2016.

"We thank Jon for his hard work, effort and service during his time at the club but feel that a change in management is in the best interests of the football club at this stage.

"The club will now go through the necessary recruitment process while Ian Sharps, assisted by John Ward, will take temporary charge of first-team affairs.

"The club will be making no further comment at this stage.

"We wish Jon all the very best for the future."
