Dan Agyei’s screamers for Walsall no fluke, insists Jon Guthrie

Jon Guthrie insists Dan Agyei’s habit of scoring spectacular goals for Walsall is no fluke – because he’s seen him do it in training.

Agyei has netted three League One goals since signing on loan from Burnley – two of them spectacular, including Saturday’s opener against table-topping Shrewsbury Town.

And defender Guthrie is impressed by the 20-year-old’s confidence.

“He’s done a couple of those in training, to be fair! So it’s not exactly a fluke for him,” said Guthrie. “A lot of football is about confidence and he’s clearly confident if he’s scoring goals like that.

“It’s nice seeing them go into the top corner as they are!”

Agyei also netted a screamer against Charlton and despite results being inconsistent so far this season, Guthrie believes that sort of confidence is running throughout the team.

“It’s a really positive environment and credit must go to the management and staff for that,” added the centre-half, signed from Crewe in the summer. “They keep it upbeat around the training ground and everywhere, really. All the games we’ve had, probably Rotherham aside, have been close-run and we’ve been in the game competing.”

Next up, Blackpool visit the Banks’s Stadium on Saturday, with the Saddlers looking to protect their unbeaten home record.

“They’ll come to us knowing it’ll be a tough game, looking at our home form,” said Guthrie. “They’ve started the season well, coming up from the division below, and it’s down to us to stop that confidence early to get those three points.”
