Stafford Rangers on a roll as Hednesford slip up

Stafford Rangers moved above Staffordshire rivals Hednesford Town after picking up their third Northern Premier win on the spin.

Boro saw off Witton Albion 3-1 in front of 483 supporters at Marston Road last night as they continue to build momentum under new manager Steve Burr.

Theo Bailey-Jones’ 10th-minute shot put Stafford ahead when it was misjudged by visiting goalkeeper Greg hall.

It remained 1-0 until just after the hour mark when Tom Thorley’s strike hit the post and then deflected into the net off Michael Wilson.

That two-goal advantage did not last for long though as James Foley got Witton back in the game.

A nervous period followed until Harry Benns’ good work was finished off by substitute Lewis Banks with just three minutes of the match remaining.

Burr and his charges – who have won four in a row in all competitions thanks to their FA Cup triumph on Saturday – moved above their great rivals Hednesford Town after the Pitmen slipped to a narrow loss on the road.

Nathan Jarman scored the only goal for Mickleover Sports 11 minutes before the interval, but Rob Smith’s charges had their chances.

Preston loanee Michael Howard and Reece King struck the crossbar within seconds of each other in the first half. And they could have snatched a point deep into the stoppage time – only denied a share of the spoils by a superb save from Lewis King.
