Montel Gibson chasing another Yeltz treble

Montel Gibson is chasing a hat-trick of FA Cup hat-tricks as Halesowen Town target an FA Cup shock in front of BBC cameras at The Grove tomorrow (12.30pm).

The 21-year-old striker has fired the Yeltz into an third qualifying round tie against Altrincham by scoring three goals against each Lichfield City and Stratford Town in the last two rounds. And with the game being broadcast on the BBC Sport website, it is an opportunity for Gibson and Halesowen to show what they are all about.

“In front of goal I’ve been clinical,” said Gibson, who was released by Notts County in 2017. “The service from the midfield has been good – I’m enjoying it.

“I’m working hard and the gaffer (Paul Smith) is helping me try to get the best out of me and get back (to the Football League).

“And as a club we want to get Halesowen back to where they want.”

The next step along that way would be to fire them into the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup, and leave them just one win from a place in the first round proper and a potential date with the likes of Ipswich Town or Sunderland. Tomorrow’s opponents Altrincham may be two leagues above the Yeltz, but they have had a difficult start to the National League North season, where they are 18th.

“We had training and there were smiles on everyone’s faces,” said Gibson. “We just have to keep our feet on the ground and work hard. I think if we are on it, we will turn them (Altrincham) over.”

Gibson was a hot prospect at Notts County, but after leaving there he admitted he struggled to retain his love for football.

“I was at Notts County from 15 or 16 and got into the first team, but then They had four different managers so I had to prove myself over and over again,” he said. “When I went into non-league, I was working hard, but not getting anything out of it.”

He brought a spell at Bedworth United to an early conclusion last season and considered his future before Smith picked up the phone to sign him.

“Thanks to the gaffer for giving me the opportunity,” he added.

Rushall Olympic will also be looking to progress when they visit Belper Town tomorrow (3pm) – and summer signing Mitch Clarke believes the Pics can reach the fourth qualifying round for the first time in six years.

“I can’t wait for the game on Saturday,” continued Clarke. “I’d like to think that we will go there and put in a strong performance to get ourselves in the hat for the next round.

“It will be a tough game against a side that has started the season well and it’s sure to be a physical test for us as well.

“We’re playing with a lot of confidence at the moment and to have a run in the FA Cup would be fantastic for the club on so many levels.”
