Lee Hughes will lead the line at Halesowen again
Lee Hughes has returned to Halesowen Town ahead of the new season.
The 43-year-old former Albion and Kidderminster striker finished as the Yeltz’s top goalscorer last campaign and ended it as their caretaker player-manager.
But having failed in his bid to take over at The Grove on a permanent basis – Paul Smith getting the job instead – he looked set to leave this summer.
However, Hughes has now agreed to return, much to Smith’s delight.
“Lee’s pedigree is there for all to see,” he said. “His record speaks for itself. He still has plenty of goals left in him.
“He also wants to help improve the young crop of strikers we have signed.
“If they listen and learn, he will help them no end. His experience and knowledge is gold.”
Hughes, who scored 13 goals in 49 appearances last season, has played for Forest Green Rovers, Kidderminster Harriers, Ilkeston Town, Worcester City and AFC Telford United since dropping into non- league.
Before that, he enjoyed a prolific professional career in which he twice signed for the Baggies – first for £200,000 from Harriers and then for £2.5million from Coventry, a year after joining the Sky Blues for £5million from Albion.
