Defensive ace Ezri Konsa admits Villa cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves as they look to bounce back from Sunday’s gut-wrenching loss to Tottenham.

Dean Smith’s remain deep in relegation danger after Son Heung-min’s winner deep in stoppage time condemned them to a 3-2 defeat.

But centre-back Konsa took heart in Villa’s overall performance and believes there are positives they can take into this weekend’s trip to Southampton.

“We just have to go again,” he said. “Personally, I thought we were brilliant on Sunday. Tottenham are a really good side and we knew it would be tough.

“But I thought we gave them a really good test.

“We just have to keep doing what we are doing and carry on what we did on Sunday into the Southampton game.”

Villa remain 17th in the table, just a place and a point outside the bottom three.

Konsa revealed how players had quickly moved to console Bjorn Engels, after his defensive partner’s error allowed Son to snatch the later winner.

“It is part of football and we will stick behind him. Everyone makes mistakes,” said Konsa.

“You can be the best player in the world but still make mistakes. It is all about how you react.

“As a dressing room, we are all close. We have all put our arm around him and told him it is part of football.

“He knows it himself. He is experienced. We will stick by him.”
