Bjorn Engels is confident Villa’s season will soon have lift-off provided they are able to cut out costly mistakes.

Newly-promoted Villa are yet to pick up a point in the Premier League after suffering defeats to Tottenham and Bournemouth.

But Engels, one of 12 summer signings, has found encouragement from performances which have indicated better times may be ahead once Dean Smith’s new-look team adapts to the top flight.

Villa paid the price for a nightmare start against Bournemouth last weekend when they conceded twice in the opening 12 minutes, eventually going on to lose the match 2-1.

Engels said: “Those two moments cost us the game and we need to learn from them.

“But if we keep on playing like we have and cut out the mistakes, the points will come soon.

“Of course, we need to get some on the board soon and the quicker, the better. I think we need to take the positives and keep on going.”

Villa next host Everton on Friday night and Engels knows they are in for a tough encounter against a team with genuine top six aspirations.

The Belgian defender’s performances have been among the biggest positives of the opening two weekends, but he acknowledges others need time to get used to the intensity of the Premier League.

“We have a lot of new players and Saturday was only our second match at the highest level. Give us time,” he said. “Some guys need some more time than other guys. We will get better.

“There is big intensity every minute (in the Premier League). You don’t have any time to rest. It is something new for me.

“Every second you need to be sharp. It is the best league in the world and we need to be ready.”
