Dean Smith bemoans nightmare start following Aston Villa defeat

The hosts found themselves two goals down inside 12 minutes as Josh King and Harry Wilson struck early for the Cherries.

Though Douglas Luiz gave Villa hope with a stunning goal on his full debut, they were unable to find an equaliser and have no points from their opening two fixtures back in the top flight.

Villa found themselves on the back foot immediately when goalkeeper Tom Heaton brought down Callum Wilson, allowing King to score a second minute spot-kick.

Harry Wilson then profited from a huge deflection off Tyrone Mings and in off the post after Luiz had allowed a pass from Trezeguet to run through his legs.

Boss Smith said: "In the first minute of the game and we give a needless penalty away.

“Callum Wilson was going nowhere and Tom comes out in an area he'd probably wouldn’t do normally, so he was on the back foot straight away.

“We then make a mistake with a square pass in midfield. Dougie lets it go and the lad lets it fly from 30 yards and it deflects in.

“So we are 2-0 down after 10 minutes at home in the first Premier League game at Villa Park in a while is a very hard place to start.

"I don't put it down to new players. Mistakes happen in every game You see most of the goals from today and a lot of them are made from mistakes.

“They've had a bit of fortune, you saw that with the second goal.”

Smith also felt the Cherries were fortunate to reach half-time without being reduced to 10 men after Philip Billing was guilty of making a number of rash challenges, after already being booked.

Referee Martin Atkinson was jeered off the pitch at half-time and Smith said: “I think they've had a massive amount of fortune with Philip Billing staying on the pitch.

"He got booked early in the first half and made a poor foul on Jack Grealish which wasn't given then he's made two more poor fouls after. He should have been sent off there's no doubt about that.

"I think Martin (Atkinson) didn't have his best day today but I thought second half we speeded up the play a little bit, caused them a few problems and scored a wonderful goal with the execution of Douglas.

"I think it fizzled out in the end and Bournemouth managed it well. When you're 2-0 up 10 minutes into a game at Villa Park you can go and slow the game down and they certainly did that.”
