Dean Smith’s men will play a friendly against Minnesota United in St Paul on Wednesday, July 17, with a 7pm local kick-off time.

The game will take place at the end of a Stateside pre-season camp ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Boss Smith has already flown out to Minnesota to survey the facilities his team will use.

The trip is being viewed as an opportunity for the club to boost commercial opportunities in the US.

Villa are part-owned by the American billionaire, Wes Edens.

A club statement explained: “A key element of the club’s ongoing strategy is to reach out to our fans all over the world both online and where possible in person by playing matches.

“This match in Minnesota will give the opportunity for our US fans to watch the team first hand.

“We are working on packages for UK and US-based fans to stay near the squad, watch them train and attend the big match.”

Villa, meanwhile, expect to learn on Wednesday morning whether Friday’s Championship game at Bolton will go ahead.

Bolton council are seeking further assurances over crowd safety before giving the green light.

The financially-troubled Trotters are currently under the threat of a winding-up order.
