Here we rate the players after a frustrating afternoon at Portman Road.

Orjan Nyland

The Norwegian international has made two appearances for Villa and endured two difficult afternoons. A bad error probably cost his team two points. Faces a test of character early in his Villa career. 4/10.

Axel Tuanzebe

Linked-up well with Ahmed Elmohamady in the opening half and looked more confident in his second appearance at right-back. Sacrificed after the break as Villa went hunting the winner. 6/10.

James Chester

The skipper has been Villa's most consistent performer for the past two years and this display was typically assured. Seemed to enjoy the physical battle. 6/10.

Mile Jedinak

Selected again at centre-back, the Australian international submitted a better performance than against Wigan the previous week. Yet there were still at least a couple of moments of uncertainty. 5/10.

Alan Hutton

No shortage of commitment from the fans' favourite, though the limitations of playing a naturally right-sided player at left-back were exposed as Villa pushed for a winner. Experienced a couple of nervy moments at the back. 5/10.

Birkir Bjarnason

Villa's match-winner from the previous week got through no shortage of work in the middle of the park. But he struggled to make a meaningful impact on proceedings as was taken off midway through the second half. 5/10.

Ahmed Elmohamady

Started the game on the right of midfield before dropping back to right-back. Elmohamady is not a player who makes many mistakes, yet he can also struggle at times to catch the eye. 6/10.

Jack Grealish

Villa's creator-in-chief was well-shackled by the hosts, though he was also fouled relentlessly. Never stopped pushing and probing but this was a day when things just didn't come off. 6/10.

Albert Adomah

Villa's top scorer from last season has experienced a difficult start to this campaign. Got the ball in decent positions but struggled to do much with it. Delivery into the box left plenty to be desired. 5/10.

Jonathan Kodjia

Ending a near 11 month goal drouhgt clearly came as a huge relief to the striker, who ran most of the length of the pitch in celebration. His best performance for some time. 6/10.

Star Man

John McGinn

The Scot was Villa's man-of-the-match for the second week running. Delivered a delicious cross for Kodjia's goal and got through plenty of hard work in the middle of the park. 7/10.

Substitutes

Andre Green (for Tuanzebe, 63)

Struggled to make an impact and appears reluctant to take defenders on. 5/10.

Conor Hourihane (for Bjarnason, 63)

Tested Bialkowski with a shot and got stuck in. 6/10.

Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (for Adomah, 78)

Some nice moments.
