But while boss Steve Bruce has identified players he believes can inspire his side to another promotion push, it is still unclear what funds will be available to the 57-year-old.

With the club in financial crisis after missing out on a place in the Premier League, chairman Tony Xia is now desperately trying to source new investment.

At least two groups are believed to be interested in purchasing the club, while Xia turned down an offer of £40million for a 51 per cent stake in the club earlier this week.

Bruce, though, wants the owner to approve his transfer plans when the club return for pre-season training on Wednesday.

Burn is one of the players he is believed to be interested in. And after impressing for the Latics last season, he is refusing to rule out a move away.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m a Wigan player, I’m enjoying it here,” he said.

“But at the same time in football you can never say never. I could stand here and tell you I’m going to be here for ever, and the next day you’re being sold.”

Villa’s home clash with Brentford has been put back 24 hours to Wednesday August 22 for TV purposes.
