Aston Villa pair Mile Jedinak and Birkir Bjarnason take to the World Cup stage

Villa duo Mile Jedinak and Birkir Bjarnason thrust themselves to the forefront of the World Cup action on Saturday.

Mile Jedinak scored a penalty in Australia’s 2-1 defeat to France in Group C – the Socceroos pushing their much-fancied counterparts all the way.

Then Bjarnason and his fellow Icelandics gave giants Argentina a bloody nose as they came from behind to hold the two-time winners to a 1-1 draw in Moscow.

Villa midfielder Bjarnason missed a glorious opportunity to fire Iceland in front when he dragged a shot wide.

And he was made to pay for that miss when Sergio Aguero turned and thundered a shot into the top left corner.

Their lead would last just four minutes though as Iceland swept forward and caused confusion in the Argentina defence, allowing Alfred Finnbogason to score after Willy Caballero had palmed away Gylfi Sigurdsson’s low cross.

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi would still get the chance to win it when Argentina were awarded a penalty. However, Hannes Halldorsson denied Messi to earn Iceland a famous point.

Earlier, Jedinak looked as if he had grabbed Australia the same result against France when he converted from the spot. However, goal-line technology was required for a late French winner, claimed by Paul Pogba after a deflection off Aziz Behich.

In Saturday’s other two games, Denmark beat Peru 1-0 (Group C) and Croatia overcame Nigeria 2-0 (Group D).
