Aston Villa transfer news: Steve Bruce playing waiting game

Steve Bruce has promised he won’t bring in players for the sake of it this month as Villa continue to play a waiting game in the transfer market.

The boss is keen to bring in one or two players on loan to bolster his squad for the Championship run-in and has made enquiries for Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe and Leicester City striker Leonardo Ulloa.

But with Villa’s injury list now shorter than it has been all season, Bruce would happy to stick with what he’s got if those deals cannot be completed.

“If I don’t (do any deals) then so be it,” he said. “I’ve got 23 players training today so there’s a big squad out there.

“But if there’s someone out there who can improve us, then we will do it.

“I’m not just going to bring people in because the transfer window is open.

“They have to be of a certain quality. If we can do it, great.

“If we can’t then we will stick with what we’ve got, and so far it’s been okay.

“We have coped and done well and we’re getting some big players back.”

Villa’s need to remain within the parameters of Financial Fair Play mean Bruce is restricted to the loan market this month.

He added: “I think as a manager you have always got to be looking at how you can improve.

“My job is to keep knocking on the door, keep badgering away, to say if someone becomes available.

“I’ve said all along, the Financial Fair Play becomes a problem because we can’t go and buy someone.

“Sometimes it’s not possible. If a good player becomes available we’re restricted.

“That doesn’t mean we can’t strengthen. It’s more restrictive but, if you can, add when you’re at your strongest.”
