Reports in Australia claim McCormack, currently on loan at Melbourne City, has torn an anterior cruciate ligament and is poised to miss at least eight months.

McCormack was forced off after landing awkwardly during Melbourne’s 3-1 defeat to Sydney FC on Friday. The 31-year-old is expected to undergo scans over the weekend.

McCormack joined Melbourne on loan in October after finding himself well down the pecking order at Villa Park.

The Scot has netted just three goals for Villa since joining in a £12million move from Fulham in August 2016 and had a public falling out with Bruce over his fitness.

McCormack infamously missed training after claiming the gates to his home were broken and spent the second half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest.

He had made two appearances for Villa this season, both in the Carabao Cup.
