The 29-year-old was forced off just half-an-hour into Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Cardiff following a collision with Bluebirds keeper Neil Etheridge.

Boss Steve Bruce revealed the Egyptian international had sustained an injury to his mouth, which may require surgery and will at the very least keep him sidelined for several days.

It is news which further increases the gloom for Bruce, who is currently without several key players including last season’s top scorer Jonathan Kodjia.

Midfielder Mile Jedinak is also a week away from being available after undergoing groin surgery during the summer, while Jack Grealish has been ruled out for three months with kidney damage.

Teenage winger Andre Green was meanwhile not risked at Cardiff, having picked up a groin strain in Villa’s midweek Carabao Cup win at Colchester.
