Ellie Simmonds picked for Euro Open championship

Aldridge swimming ace Ellie Simmonds will up her preparations for the Tokyo Paralympics by representing Britain at the 2020 Para Swimming Open European Championships.

Simmonds, 25, is one of 24 British para-swimmers that have been called up to compete at the event in Madeira in May.

The five-time Paralympic medallist and eight-time world title winner will compete at the championships in May.

Team leader Catherine Gilby said it will be good preparation as Simmonds prepares to defend her 200 m individual medley SM6 gold medal at the Paralympics in August and September 2020.

She said: “This is a great chance for established team members to have a race opportunity that supports their Individual Athlete Plans as we head towards the Paralympic Games.

“In addition, the competition is the perfect environment for our emerging athletes targeting the 2024 and 2028 Paralympics”

Also selected are world champions Brock Whiston, Tai and Dunn will head to Madeira, as will Paralympic medallists Ellie Robinson, and Ollie Hynd.
