Robert Rock one off lead in Ireland

Staffordshire’s Robert Rock sunk six birdies as he made a superb start to the Irish Open.

The 41-year-old, from Armitage, near Rugeley, carded a four-under-par 68 at Ballyliffin to sit just one shot off the lead, held by New Zealand’s Ryan Fox.

Wolverhampton’s Aaron Rai ended the day level par in a tie for 44th after matching four birdies with as many bogeys.

There are three qualification places up for grabs for The 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie.
