LETTER: Garden project springs to life

Back in June I applied on behalf of Black Horse allotment association, along with the local infant and junior school, for funding from the Big Lottery fund to alter the use of an overgrown allotment plot, changing its use into a community wildlife and sensory garden.

The joy of life tending an allotment

We were successful in our bid, being allocated £9,925, this will and is being used to totally clear and install a shallow pond, raised beds, seating area and summerhouse.

Obviously, to create a habitat where people and wildlife can co-exist will be a challenge, but with the help of all concerned I am sure we can succeed.

The work on the project commenced on September 24, the paths have been laid, raised beds and pond in situ, the summerhouse will be installed on October 20.

Now the work starts to refine the project; fruit trees to be planted, along with spring bulbs and herb garden.

The idea is to have the project up and running by the spring, so that children from the local schools can experience the thrill of watching plants grow, along with watching and studying the numerous birds, butterflies, bugs and foxes we have on the site.

Anyone who wishes to follow the progress of the project can do so through my Facebook page. The official opening will be in the spring. To end I would like to thank the lads from Pat’s Garden Services, along with Garden Force for their tenacity in getting the work done in just six days.
