Express & Star comment: We’re just back at square one, folks

Parliament is back – but excuse us for not getting overly excited at the prospect of the next few weeks of heated debate in the country’s seat of mediocrity.

In an ideal world our MPs would be working tooth and nail to thrash out some kind of Brexit deal, but that would be wishful thinking.

Instead, while they are busy hurling insults at each other across the House, the only actual work being done is directed towards the latest stage of Operation Stop Brexit.

Despite the excitement over the Supreme Court ruling, nothing much has really changed.

The Opposition wants the Prime Minister out but won’t agree to a general election, while Boris Johnson wants to deliver Brexit but doesn’t appear to have the foggiest idea how to do it. Attorney General Geoffrey Cox may well have summed up the mood of the nation with his less than complimentary opinion on the state of the current Parliament. But as a country, we are simply back at square one.
