Express & Star comment: Survey to gauge view of readers

Britain’s status in the world has sparked a great deal of debate in recent years, particularly since the Brexit vote brought forward the possibility of the nation forging its own path away from the EU.

Since then the country has arguably entered a state of flux the likes of which has never been seen before in modern times, with political upheaval causing uncertainty in almost every aspect of our lives.

Voting to leave the EU was one thing, but the turbulence that followed has set in motion a chain of events that few would have predicted.

Who would have thought we would still be tied to Brussels nearly five months after our departure should have been sealed?

And who could possibly have predicted the potential collapse of the two-party system, the rise of the Lib Dems and the Greens, as well as the dramatic emergence of the Brexit Party?

There are undoubtedly also concerns emanating from farther afield, with the potential threats to world peace numerous and growing.

Today the Star launches a landmark survey into the state of the nation.

We want readers to tell us their views on the future prospects for the UK. Should we be looking to the future in a positive light, or are we entering a dark period for the country?

We want to know how readers feel about the key issues of the day, from the prospects of a no-deal Brexit to Boris Johnson’s premiership and the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn.

Issues such as knife crime and the NHS – two matters which many feel were not given the attention they deserved under Theresa May’s administration – are also put under the microscope.

Are readers confident that our hospitals and police forces will be equipped to deal with the challenges of the future?

Is it time that Britain considered drugs reforms, with calls for the legalisation of medicinal cannabis growing louder by the day?

Our survey is due to run until midnight on Wednesday, via expressandstar.com, and we want as many readers as possible to take part.

After that we will analyse and then publish the results of what is sure to be an interesting insight into the mood of the region.
