Express & Star comment: Wolves' promotion Neves in any doubt

What an incredible season it has been for Wolves.

Wolves were promoted on Saturday before beating Birmingham City on Sunday

The weekend’s results mean the club is heading back to the Premier League for the first time since 2012.

And how the club has changed in the years since that desperate season, which ended in Wolves dropping down almost without a whimper under Terry Connor.

This season, with the brilliant Nuno Espírito Santo at the helm, the team has simply been a joy to behold.

While there has been the occasional bump in the road, but for the most part it has been plain sailing.

They have swept aside all before them, attacking teams like the ravenous wolfpack that they are and playing some sublime football.

Many Wolves fans will not have seen a side of this pedigree wearing gold and black in their life times.

The likes of Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota have lit up the Championship. They will be looking forward to appearing at venues far more glamorous than Oakwell and the Pirelli Stadium next season.

But we should not forget the major influence the likes of Matt Doherty, Barry Douglas and super captain Conor Coady have had on the season.

In truth, the entire squad have played their part.

There have been some marvellous moments, not least the incredible away wins at Bristol City and Cardiff City.

Neves’ wonder strike against Derby will not be forgotten in a hurry, and neither will the Molineux defeat of Aston Villa.

Fans of other clubs across the region may well feel a sense of resentment over Wolves success this year.

But they should all remember the hard times that Wolves supporters have been through.

Thankfully, those dark days can now be consigned to the history books once and for all.

Great credit must be given to owners Fosun for the way in which they have turned the club’s fortunes around. They have conducted themselves with an enviable level of professionalism.

Executive chairman Jeff Shi will be well aware that with promotion comes increased expectations.

But up to now, everyone at Fosun has demonstrated that they have the wherewithal required to take Wolves to heights not reached in decades.

Well done to all at Molineux. Their success is a major fillip for the city.

The Premier League should be an incredible journey.
