The death of Cyrille Regis has understandably been met with much despair in the football world and beyond.

The Express & Star remembers the life of Cyrille Regis with an eight-page pull out in today's newspaper

The great man was a pioneer who led the way for black footballers in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson.

Away from the game Regis was a gentle giant, who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

It is hard to find anyone who has a bad word to say about this wonderful, dignified man, who devoted years of his life to raising money for charity.

It is extremely rare for a footballer to ply his trade with Albion, Villa and Wolves and be loved and revered by fans of all of them, yet Regis managed it.

As a player he broke down barriers, and now he has brought people together in mourning.

The word 'legend' is overused, particularly in the football world.

However, it could not be more appropriate in Regis' case.

Rest in peace, Cyrille, you were one of the very best.
