The 17-year-old was hit by a white Fiat 500 on the A519 in Slindon, near Eccleshall, at around 8.15am on Thursday.

Police initially said she had suffered minor injuries and did not need hospital treatment, however the ambulance service said she was taken to hospital with "potentially serious injuries".

Staffordshire Police is investigating the crash and the Fiat driver is said to be helping officers with their inquiries.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a collision between a car and pedestrian on Slindon Road at 8.08am.

"One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene. On arrival we discovered one patient, the pedestrian, who was a teenage girl. She was treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment."
