Man dies after falling from motorway bridge

A man died after falling from a bridge on the M5, closing the road near West Bromwich.

He suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after falling just after 12.50pm.

The M5 was closed near Junction 1 at West Bromwich to the M5 link at the M6, Junction 8, at Great Barr.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Police were called after a man fell from a bridge on the M5 near West Bromwich just after 12.50pm today.

"He suffered serious injuries and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"His death is not being treated as suspicious.

"The motorway is open although some lane closures currently remain in place."

Highways England tweeted to say there was at least an hour delay in both directions.

The route began to be reopened from 3.30pm.
