Lanes one and two were closed at about 7.30am from Stafford North to Stoke on Trent.

But Highways England said that all lanes were running about 10 minutes later.

Meanwhile, there were about six miles of tailbacks after another crash on the M6 by Junction 4A to Junction 5.

Highways England tweeted saying: "Lanes 3 and 4 closed #M6 J4A #M42link to J5 #CastleBromwich, due to a traffic collision. #Trafficofficers are en route. Approach with caution.

"All lanes are NOW OPEN #M6 #Birmingham #Warwickshire #WestMidlands however long delays remain in the area. There are approx 6.5 miles of congestion back towards #Corley which is expected to add around 1 hour onto normal journey times. Delays on #M42 approaches, pls plan ahead."
