The closures had been put in place to allow workers to safely complete repairs between Junction 3 and 2 eastbound.

But Highways England has now confirmed the remaining repairs can be carried out using lane closures.

The organisation's senior project manager, Jessica Kenny, said: “Extensive progress has been made on the essential repairs and maintenance being carried out on the M54 which means no further weekend or night-time closures are now expected after tonight.

“Two weekend and some night-time closures were necessary to ensure the safety of workers carrying out the repairs on the M54 eastbound, between junctions three and two. It was anticipated that the overnight closures would continue until June 7.

“However, with the progress made we believe we can now safely finish the remaining work using lane closures, minimising disruption for road users. We are grateful to motorists for their understanding while these important works are being carried out.”
