The M6 southbound was backed up for nine miles after a crash involving a tanker near Great Barr led to a spillage on the motorway at around 6.30am.

Drivers were queueing from as far back as Junction 10a for Wolverhampton after the smash happened in between Junction 7 for Great Barr and Junction 6 Spaghetti Junction.

Traffic was temporarily stopped before two out of four southbound lanes were closed while debris was cleared from the scene, the spillage was treated and two cars were recovered.

The crash caused knock-on delays on the eastbound M54, which joins the M6 at Junction 10a, until all lanes were reopened at around 8am.

Meanwhile there were delays for drivers heading into Wolverhampton after a crash on the A449 Stafford Road.

Traffic was backed up towards the M54 after the collision next to UTC Aerospace Systems at around 7.45am.

It is believed three cars were involved in the crash, which happened outside The Moreton Arms pub at the junction with Springfield Lane.

A crew from West Midlands Ambulance were sent but no-one required hospital treatment.

A black estate car crashed into the fence in front of the pub while a white hatchback was left surrounded by debris in the middle of the junction.

Just minutes before a separate crew helped a man after a crash between a car and a cyclist.

It happened at 7.41am near the Wobaston Road junction at Pendeford.

Ambulance staff assessed the man at the scene but he did not require hospital treatment.

Congestion was heavier than normal in both directions as a result of the two collisions, with drivers heading into the city queuing from Junction 2 of the M54 in Coven Heath.
