The operator of the motorway announced the new prices last month, facing huge criticism.

There will be a new trial to cap prices for car drivers and measures to support local businesses.

From 6am this morning, prices have risen for cars by between 30p and 50p per journey, for light goods vehicles by 10p to 30p and for heavy goods vehicles by 20p to 50p, depending on the journey made.

Prices will be frozen for night time journeys for all light and heavy goods vehicles to support operators during the M6 roadworks.

Midlands Express Ltd (MEL), which is behind the move, were urged to scrap the plans over fears they could lead to more traffic on nearby free-to-use motorways.
