The crash, believed to involve three cars and a van, happened on the southbound carriageway this morning.

Police said drivers and passengers had suffered 'minor injuries' in the smash.

Six people were checked over by ambulance staff but none required hospital treatment.

The crash took place between Junction 6 for the Aston Expressway and Junction 5 for Castle Bromwich.

Long queues formed of around 90 minutes heading back towards Junction 10A for the M54, said Highways England.

Traffic was only running at an average of between 4mph and 11mph on the stretch from J10 southbound to J7 for Great Barr.

The crash happened shortly before 5.40am.

Highways officers were able to reopen another lane by 8.15pm.

Huge tailbacks stretched to the A38 Tyburn Road.

Officials reported a break down which added to queues at Great Barr and a minor collision close to J10.

The route was fully reopened by 10am.
