The old police base, in Chester Road North, closed in 2014 in a bid to save West Midlands Police money.

Now it is being sold off as part of a scheme to protect police numbers in the Walsall borough.

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: “Since 2010 West Midlands Police has faced Government cuts of £175 million and lost more than 2,100 officers.

“Despite plans to increase officer numbers by the Government, West Midlands Police is expecting only 1,200 officers back.

“The estates programme will save £5 million and protect 100 police officer posts.”

The scheme has led to police stations in Darlaston, Tettenhall and Handsworth also being sold off to raise funds.

Mr Jamieson added: “We’re having to do it because of the level of cuts we have faced and if we didn’t we would have to lose even more officers from our streets.”

Property agents KWB said the property represents an “excellent redevelopment” opportunity in the town.

Councillor Kenneth Ferguson, who represents Brownhills, said: “It’s been closed for a length of time now but it’s still a shame.

“My preference is for it to be opened and used but cuts have been made. There’s talk about us having new officers and, as our leader says, police stations don’t catch criminals.”

The main property is brick-built with a flat roof and comprises a detached two-storey building, with a rear single-storey cell block covering 9,299 sq ft of space.

A total of 36 secure parking spaces are located at the back of the building.

A detached two-storey former police house, next to the main building, is being sold as part of the base – which has three bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and lounge.
