The development has been earmarked for agricultural fields separating Pheasey and Streetly, on Queslett Road and Aldridge Road.

The Columba Park development would cost £218.5 million to build over an eight-year period. No planning application has been submitted yet to the local planning authority, Walsall Council.

But campaigners have hit back at what they call "the destruction of an important local haven for wildlife".

A petition launched by Steve Lilly last month has now gathered more than 2,350 signatures – nearly reaching its 2,500 target.

Signing the petition, Lesley Wetheimer said: "Housing is needed but not at the expense of wildlife which is essential for the physical and mental health of humans and can't be replaced."

Judi Hallworth added: "Our rapidly diminishing wildlife urgently needs protecting from our destruction of their habitats. Our overpopulation should not mean the extinction of vital ecosystems and lack of thought for other living creatures."
